Background: The Military Tribunal in Morocco has handed down death sentences on sixteen Moroccans, accused of plotting to overthrow the Government of King Hassan. A further 71 received prison sentences, 15 of them being imprisoned for life. A total of 70 other defendants were acquitted.

The mass trial resulted from a series of police raids after a spate of attempted political assassinations and bombings of public buildings, military posts and United States installations.

Although the defendants, 157 in all, were mostly civilians, the case was heard by a military court. Eight of the defendants were lawyers, including five members of a political party opposing the king.

In January this year, 11 military officers were executed by a firing squad, for their part in an attempt on the king's life back in June 1972.

SYNOPSIS: In the Moroccan town of Kenitra 157 people have been on trial for treason before a military tribunal. Sixteen of the accused have been sentenced to death.

The mass trial resulted from a series of police raids after a spate of attempted political assassinations and bombings of public buildings, military posts and United States installations.

During the trial the Court was shown military equipment and arms which the prosecution said were found in the possession of some of the defendants. Most of the accused were civilians, but the case was heard by the Permanent Military Tribunal of Morocco.

Apart from the 16 sentenced to death 71 received prison sentences, 15 of them being imprisoned for life, and a further 70 were acquitted of all charges. The trial lasted over two months.
