Background: Four thousand Cambodian mercenaries who have been serving with the Americans in South Vietnam, have returned to their home territory to fight the communists.
The mercenaries..known as the Khmer Krom....are being billeted at the large Soviet-built sports stadium in Phnom Penh which was been declared out-of-bounds to newsmen. Soon they will be joined by a further four thousand mercenaries, who will help defend the Cambodian capital. The Viet Cong are thought to be closer than 20 miles form Phnom Penh, and have more than doubled their area of influence in less than a month.
Meanwhile, American and South Vietnamese invasion forces are moving deeper into Cambodia. The Cambodian Army has reported meeting steady resistance from guerillas south of Phnom Penh. The main road from the South-east, until recently used only by taxis and tri-shaws, is now overflowing with military vehicles, artillery, and reinforcements heading for the action fronts.
