Background: President Anwar Sadat on Monday briefed the political leaders of the U.A.R. on efforts to reach an agreement with Israel on re-opening the Suez Canal.
He reported to a joint meeting comprising the 360-member National Assembly, Cabinet Ministers and leaders of the Arab Socialist Union - Egypt's party machine.
The closed-door session took place a few hours after Joseph Sisco, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs, left for Washington following four hours of talks with Mr Sadat.
He is reported to have said at the meeting that he was aware the price for liberation of occupied Arab territories entailed 'immense sacrifices and hard times', but Egypt would not settle for less than full Israeli evacuation from Arab territories.
Egypt, he said, was prepared to go to war if the current political efforts failed to settle the Arab-Israeli conflict peacefully.
