Background: SYNOPSIS: The British Industrial Technology Exhibition has got off to a very promise start. Two hundred thousand Chinese specialists and technicians are coming here from all over China.
There's never been anything quite like this in Peking. Britain's offering the most modern technological knowhow to the Chinese, because it's felt that must be good for British trade in the years to come. And the Chinese are all for it.
They helped make the opening a success.
All the emphasis was on Anglo-Chines co-operation.
the exhibition's president, Sir John Keswick, welcomed the Chinese guests in their own language.
It was the Chinese Foreign Trade Minister, Mr. Bai li-chiang, who formally opened the two weeks exhibition.
Then he was escorted round the stands by britain's secretary of state for trade and industry Mr. Walker and the Minister for aerospace, Mr. Heseltine. Aviation is one of the great points of interest to the Chinese. They'll soon be flying on the world's air routes.
But there are very many other things to see. Transport, machinery, two and a half million pounds worth.
Its the technicians and specialists of China that are the target for all this effort. For the next fortnight they'll be streaming in.
And those exhibition catalogues in the ??? with the union jack on, they couldn't get held of them fast enough.
