Softball ... and a look at the action of the United States' pitcher with perhaps the most unblemished record of the day, Connecticut's Joan Joyce. Dave Andratti reports.
TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER: "This is Joan Joyce. At 34 years old, maybe the best woman to over throw a softball. She pitches for the Rebestos Breakettes from Connecticut, and it is no coincidence that they won unprecedented fourth straight national title last year and could make it five in a row this season. Joan has statistics that would make even Catfish Hunter envious. Take last year's statistics for instance. Joan won forty-two and lost only two. Her earned run average was microscopic nought-point-seventeen, she threw thirteen no-hitters and six perfect games. In this game recently against a Californian team, the Chico Peppers, Joan threw a no-hitter. She says the secret was not throwing hard, but making the ball move."
JOYCE: "You're not only contending with the sped by you're also contending with the rise-ball, the drop, the curve, the screwball, the letup, you know, you're contending with a lot more things. If I find someone that's hitting certain pitches, you know, I go to the other things. I use the screwball a lot against good hitters because they haven't seen it before. I think it's an excellent pitch; it goes down like, so much, you know it drops."
REPORTER: "But Joan had enough stuff once to strike out Ted Williams. It's little wonder then that women find it difficult to hit Joan Joyce."

Background: Joan Joyce, at 34 years old is considered the finest pitcher in United States' softball, and some say she's the best woman ever to throw a softball.
Joan pitches for the Rabestos Breakettes from Connecticut, the team which has won four national titles in a row, and is heading for a fifth triumph.
As a pitcher, Joan has statistics which can only be called phenomenal. Last year she won forty-two matches and lost only two. Her earned-run average is also outstanding: 0.17. During the entire season she threw thirteen no-hitters and six perfect games.
Joan believes the secret in pitching well is not to use force, but to move the ball in the air. Her strongest weapon against good hitters is the screwball which has a deep drop.
