    Background: TWO THOUSAND NEGROES, RINGING PATRIOTIC SONGS AND CARRYING SLOGANS URGING PEOPLE NOT TO BUY THIS CHRISTMAS, CLASHED WITH POLICE IN BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA, U.S.A., DECEMBER 15. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE MARCHING ON EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH COURT-HOUSE BUILDING WERE 23 OF THEIR NUMBER WERE UNDER ARREST FOR PICKETING STORES THE DAY BEFORE IN PROTEST AT RACIAL SEGREGATION REGULATIONS.

    POLICE WERE STATIONED AT TEN-FOOT INTERVALS, AND ARMED WITH BATONS AND TEAR-GAS BOMBS TO KEEP THE DEMONSTRATORS OUT OF THE SQUARE AROUND THE COURT-HOUSE POLICE THREW THE TEAR-GAS BOMBS AT THE DEMONSTRATORS AND IN THE SCRAMBLE TO ESCAPE THE FUMES, THEY LEFT PAVEMENTS LITTERED WITH UMBRELLAS, WALKING STICKS AND SHOES. SOME 30 NEGROES WERE ARRESTED.

    MOST OF THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE FROM SOUTHERN (NEGRO) UNIVERSITY, NORTH OF THE TOWN. SOME MARCHED INTO BATON ROUGE, OTHERS CAME IN BUSES OPERATED BY A NEGRO COMPANY. THE MARCH WAS ORGANISED BY MEMBERS OF THE CONGRESS OF RACIAL EQUALITY (C.O.R.E.).
