Background: The future of the proposed tour of South Africa by the French Rugby team still hung in the balance on April 20, despite a statement by the French Rugby Federation that it would go ahead. M. Albert Ferrasse, Federation President, answered a plea by Sports Minister Mme Edwige Avice to ban the tour by saying that the team had already played in the Soviet Union, Israel and Argentina without provoking any opposition. But, he told a news conference in Paris on April 19, the federation had left the ultimate decision with President Francois Mitterrand. Opinion is divided as to how the President will react to the statement of M Ferrasse, who challenged M Mitterrand to have the courage to give him a direct refusal.
