Background: GREY, THREATENING CONDITIONS TODAY (MONDAY) FOR THE OPENING OF THE 78TH WIMBLEDON TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS...

IN THE OPENING MATCH THE 23-YEAR-OLD WIMBLEDON CHAMPION, CHUCK MCKINLEY (U.S.A.) TOOK FIFTY-EIGHT MINUTES TO BEAT THE YOUNG SOUTH AFRICAN PLAYER, TERRY RYAN IN THREE SETS 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.

A CROWD OF SEVENTEEN THOUSAND ON THE CENTRAL COURT WATCHED THE MATCH BEGIN WITH RYAN SEEMING TO HAVE THE EDGE OVER THE FIRST FEW GAMES. HOWEVER AFTER FIVE GAMES, MCKINLEY BEGAN SHOWING SOME OF THE FORM THAT WON HIM THE SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP LAST YEAR.

THE GERMAN LEFT-HANDER CHRISTIAN KUHNKE CAUSED AN UPSET WHEN HE INFLICTED A CRUSHING DEFEAT ON THE HIGHLY-RATED BUT UNPREDICTABLE BRITISH PLAYER BOBBY WILSON. KUHNKE CLINCHED THE MATCH IN FOUR SETS 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE FIRST SET WILSON SHOWED SIGNS OF NERVOUSNESS. HE LOST HIS SERVICE IN THE SECOND GAME AND MISTAKE FOLLOWED MISTAKE. HIS SHOTS WERE ERRATIC AND OFTEN COMPLETELY LACKING IN ACCURACY. AFTER ONLY TWELVE MINUTES OF PLAY HE WAS FACING A 5-1 DEFICIT.

THE SECOND SET WAS AN IMPROVEMENT ON THE FIRST AND IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE SCORE WAS 4-ALL THAT TWO PASSING SHOTS AND TWO DOUBLE FAULTS ON WILSON'S SERVICE GAVE THE GERMAN PLAYER THE BREAK HE NEEDED.

AFTER BREAKING KUHNKE'S SERVICE IN THE THIRD SET, WILSON HUNG ON AND MANAGED TO WIN 6-1. HOWEVER IN THE FOURTH SET THE GERMAN PLAYER USED BRILLIANT STROKES THAT KEPT WILSON DASHING FROM ONE SIDE OF THE COURT TO THE OTHER, AND KUHNKE HAD NO TROUBLE IN WINNING THE SET AND THE MATCH.
