Background: Hundreds of Maltese citizens demonstrated in the streets of Valletta on Wednesday (12 January) in support of the island's Prime Minister, Mr com Mintoff.
In some areas of the city, pro-Minotff supporters clashed with groups of opposition Nationalist party demonstrators, and several reports of incidents involving police were reported.
The demonstrations came at a time when the deadline set by Mr Mintoff for a complete British withdrawal was getting nearer, and when the British Government was coming under strong pressure from both the United States and Italy to step up the offers of each aid in return for the continued use of military bases on the island.
