Background: Nigeria's Head of State, Major General Yakubu Gowon, said in Lagos on Tuesday (14 July) that any attempt at secession in Africa would be a threat to the aim of unity of the entire continent. He made the statement when the Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Mr. Diallo Telli, called on him at Dodan Barracks residence.
Secession should not be allowed "to rear its ugly head", Major General Gowan said, if the aim of African unity was to be accomplished. Secession would go against the aspiration for unity of honest African leaders.
One of the "evil designs" of the enemies of Africa, he added, was to cause disunity and disaffection among its leaders and thus show that they are incapable of managing their own affairs.
The Head of State also said that one of the greatest achievements of the O.A.U. was Nigeria's success in preserving her unity and territorial integrity.
The O.A.U. Secretary-General, Mr. Telli, also congratulated General Gowon on the successful end of the Nigerian civil war, and paid tribute to him on his handling of the country's affairs.
