Background: CHATALENGO PROVINCE, SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR/THE HAGUE, AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

Four Dutch newsmen were killed in El Salvador on Wednesday (17 March). Koos Koster, 46, Hans Ter Laag, 25, Jan Kuyper, 39, and Joop Willemsen, 41, of the Inter-Church Broadcasting Company (IKON) were reporting in Chatalengo Province about 64 kilometres (40 miles) north of San Salvador, when they were killed. There are conflicting reports about their death. The Salvadorean army said they were killed while with guerrillas in a clash with government troops. But the leftist guerrillas movement accused Salvadorean rightists and the military command of murdering them. The deaths followed the publication of a death list by Salavadorean rightists containing the names of 35 journalists. Last week (11 March) the journalists were taken into custody and interrogated by police in San Salvador. In the Netherlands, foreign minister Max Van Der Stoel ordered an investigation into the deaths. Speaking in the Hague, he said the Netherlands would take no action until this was completed. In Amsterdam, mourners carried crosses and laid wreathes for the dead journalists.
