Background: Giacomo Agostini, the Italian motor cycle ace, won the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy 350 cc race yesterday for the third successive year. Agostini, 28, the reigning World Champion in both the 350cc & 500 cc classes, covered the 226.36-mile course (364,29Kms) in 2 hours, 13 mins, 28.6 secs, nearly five minutes ahead of his nearest rival, British rider Alan Barnett.
With no pressure on him, Agostini's time was well outside the record he set two years ago, but he did average 101.77 miles an hour (163.78 Kms).
This win puts Agostini well in line for a unique record. If he wins the 500 cc event on Friday, he will become the first rider ever to capture both races in three successive years.
Yesterday, Agostini was in front from start to finish in the six-lap 350 cc race and never looked like being beaten throughout.
