    An inquest opened on Tuesday (2 March) into the death of white South African trade union official Neil Aggett, who was found hanged in his cell at security police headquarters in Johannesburg. Police claimed Dr. Aggett, an official of a mainly black union, committed suicide, but his family refused to accept their statement. A lawyer representing the family of 28-year-old ??? Aggett asked the inquest for permission to inspect the cell where he died, and to talk to people detained with him. His death has angered South African blacks and white liberals. Demonstrators gathered outside the court where the inquest opened.
