    Background: NEW YORK, USA

A European team has beaten a Rest of the World side 3-2 in a charity match in New York on August 7. Showing the form that put four European teams into the semi-finals of the World Cup in Spain, the Europeans snatched victory after trailing 2-0 at half-time. The Rest of the World took the lead with goals from Zico of Brazil and Lakhdar Belloumi of Algeria. There were four Brazilians in the side, and they played a "football samba" in the first half that delighted the crowd of nearly 80,000 and spread panic among the Europeans. But, after the break, the Europeans fought back. They put together a series of strong attacks, but for a time, Cameroon goalkeeper Thomas N'Kono held them at bay. Then, in the 58th minute, Kevin Keegan of England scored Europe's first goal after a pass from Italy's Paolo Rossi. Austrian Bruno Pezzey made in 2-2 twenty minutes later. In the 88th minute, Italian Giancarlo Antognoni's shot from 20 metres just scraped by N'Kono to give Europe victory. The match, which was televised to 60 countries, raised about $300,000 for the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF).
