Background: THE WAR IN VIETNAM HAS INVOLVED TROOPS FROM THE UNITED STATES, AUSTRALIA AND KOREA. OTHER FRIENDLY NATIONS WHO ARE IN SYMPATHY WITH THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT ARE SHORTLY TO COMMIT THEIR FORCES IN THE UNENDING GUERRILLA WARFARE. VISITING DIGNITARIES NEVER FALL TO VISIT THEIR COUNTRYMEN WHO HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED TO DEFENSIVE ROLES IN AND AROUND STRATEGIC AIRBASES.

ONE SUCH VISIT YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO THE BIEN HOA STRATEGIC AIRBASE, 12 MILES NORTHWEST OF SAIGON, WAS MADE BY TWO AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENTARIANS, MESSRS. H.B. TURNER AND P.J. NIXON AND GENERAL SIR JOHN WILTON, AUSTRALIAN ARMY CHIEF OF GENERAL STAFF. THIS AIRBASE WHICH WAS TWICE ATTACKED BY VIETCONG IS BEING DEFENDED BY AUSTRALIAN AND AMERICAN TROOPS.

THE AUSTRALIAN TROOPS ARE MEMBERS OF THE 1ST BATTALION, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT, UNDER THE COMMAND OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL I.R.W. BRUMFIELD. THE BATTALION IS UNDER THE OVERALL COMMAND OF COLONEL JACKSON.

THE VISITORS WERE FLOWN TO BIEN HOA FROM SAIGON IN ARMED HELICOPTERS. THE STRENGTH OF THE TROOPS DEFENDING THIS AIRBASE IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE TO 4,500-STRONG WHEN ANOTHER 800 TO 1,000 AMERICAN ARMY PARATROOPS MOVE IN TO DEFENSIVE POSITIONS SHORTLY.

THE PARLIAMENTARIANS AND SIR JOHN WERE GREATLY IMPRESSED BY THE TROOPS FIGHTING SPIRIT AND THEIR ACTIVITIES IN DEFENDING THE AIRBASE AGAINST VIETCONG ATTACK. SIR JOHN SHOWED MUCH INTEREST IN THE ARMOURED TROOP CARRIERS WHICH ARE BASED IN THE CAMP FOR TRANSPORTING THE TROOPS IN THE EVENT OF AN ATTACK. TROOP-CARRYING ARMOURED VEHICLES ARE WIDELY USED IN BATTLES AGAINST THE VIETCONG.
