Background: In Portugal, a mass rally of communist Party members was held in Lisbon on Thursday (22 February) in honour of exiled Chilean communist leader Luis Corvalan.

SYNOPSIS: A crowd estimated at ten thousand attended the rally in the Campo Paqueno bullring in the capital. Luis Corvalan has visited communist rallies in several countries since he was released from jail in Chile in 1976. Here he listens to Portuguese communist leader Alvaro Cunhal demanding the resignation of Portugal's non-party government, led by Senhor Mota Pinto. Senhor Cunhal accused the government of contravening both the country's laws and constitution.

When he spoke, Senor Corvalan had two main targets -- the United States and China. He attacked Washington's policies around the world, and demanded that China pull her forces out of Vietnam. He said Vietnam had won ward against two countries he termed as imperialist powers -- France and the United States. The Vietnamese people, he added, had not won these wars only to fall into the hands of the Chinese, whom he accused of having expansionist policies. Senor Corvalan was jailed in 1973, when a military junta overthrew the Marxist government of Salvador Allende. He described the United State as 'the father and continuing supporter of the dictator (Augusto) Pinochet' leader of the present Chilean junta.
