Former Senator Ignazio Mineo has been shot dead near his Palermo home. He was killed in his car three shots from an automatic pistol.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen had waited two hours for him to turn up. First the two men approached him and asked for money. According to his wife, he gave them his watch and his wallet. They then shot him and made their escape in a van. Police said it was a professional job and believe it was possibly a mafia killing disguised to look like a robbery. Mineo, 60, was a Republican and a native of Palermo. He had interests in a pharmacy in Palermo and construction sites in a nearby village. The mafia are suspected of being involved in the Palermo building trade.
