Background: The British Motor Show, highlight of the year for car lovers in the United Kingdom, opened at Earls Court in London today.
More than half-a-million visitors are expected to see the show this year. Among the models on display is the new style Ford Cortina. The car now features a range of engines up to a sporty 2000 cc unit. The Cortina comes in a two-door. four-door and estate car version. This year the British car industry is trying to attract the home car buyer back following growing sales of imports.
Vauxhall's have also restyled their popular Viva model. This is available in two engine sizes -- 1159 cc and 1600 cc. Like the Ford, there's an estate car vision as well.
The Rover 2000 this year has a new grille and bonnet. The Rover 2000 has been an important export winner for Britain and the new styled model is expected to continue the trend.
The Austin Maxi has had a complete facelift. The 1500 cc to 1750 cc car now has a restyled front end, and a smooth rod-operated gear change. With this car the British Leyland Motor Corporation hopes to attract a large slice of the family motoring market.
Chrysler United Kingdom has restyled the Hunter for their 1971 range and dropped the Brand Hillman. It now comes in a de luxe, super, GT and grand luxe version.
Most unusual model this year comes from the Raliant company. Under the rules of the motor show only four wheelers may be displayed -- so Reliant joined together two of its three-wheeler Bond Bugs to meet the regulations. The resulting "push-me-pull-you" model isn't for sale. But interested customers can sign up for half.
