Background: Police dispersed demonstrators with tear-gas for the sixth successive day on Saturday (September 19) in the riot-torn city of Reggio Calabria in southern Italy. Two people have died in the rioting.

Thousands of police have been rushed into the fire-scarred streets to subdue the violence which accompanied a general strike to press the city's claims for recognition as capital of the newly formed Calabria region. The choice of smaller rival town Cantanzaro as capital has angered citizens, who feel they have more hope of emerging from the general poverty of the district if authorities recognise their claim to have their city made regional capital.

Violence broke out around the port area and police headquarters on Saturday. Demonstrators set fire to a car when police dismantled a road barricade at the port entrance which had blocked access to the city area. Removal of the barricade enabled police travelling by sea from Sicily on Friday to move into the city to reinforcement security forces.

Another crowd hurled stones and insults at police headquarters until dispersed by police-thrown tear-gas grenades. One man was reported to have been injured when hit by a grenade.

Broken road signs that had been used as weapons to build barricades littered the street along with piles of shattered glass. Shops, offices, banks and restaurants remained closed.

Piles of rotting rubbish gave off fumes which mingled with the smoke of fires which were still smouldering in the streets by evening.

On Saturday night, police reported that many roadblocks were still standing and the main road to the north was blocked at the city's outskirts.
