Background: AMERICA'S GEMINI SPACE CAPSULE - THE TWO-MAN ORBITAL SPACE-CRAFT - UNDERWENT ITS FIRST MANNED TESTING LAST TUESDAY.

THE GEMINI IS DESIGNED TO PUT TWO MEN INTO ORBIT AROUND THE EARTH FOR A PERIOD OF SEVERAL WEEKS. PRESENT PLANS CALL FOR THIS NEXT SPACE EXPERIMENT TO BE MADE SOMETIME IN 1964.

THE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED BY THE AEREASEARCH CORPORATION OF LOS ANGELES TO CHECK THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL SYSTEM ON THE CAPSULE. THE SYSTEM STIMULATES AND RECORDS THE CONDITIONS NECESSARY TO KEEP MEN ALIVE AND COMFORTABLE IN THE PROLONGED SPACE TRIP - RESPIRATION, ATMOSPHERE, PRESSURE, CHANGES IN HUMIDITY AND EVEN ODOURS.

WHEN THE TWO ENGINEERS EMERGED FROM THE CAPSULE, THEY PRONOUNCED IT "AS COMFORTABLE AS IN A LIVING ROOM." IT WOULD CERTAINLY BE MORE COMFORTABLE THAN THE CRAMPED BITTLE MERCURY ONE-MEN SPACE-CRAFT, SINCE IT IS MORE THAN TWICE THE SIZE.

THE ENGINEERS WORE PRESSURE SUITS FOR THE TWO HOUR TESTS AND TOLD THE PRESS-CONFERENCE HEAD AFTERWARDS THAT THEY HAD EXPERIENCED NO SUIT HEATING PROBLEMS WHICH PLAGUED SOME OF THE MERCURY ASTRONAUTS LAST YEAR.

THE SUIT COOLING UNIT OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL SYSTEM IN THE GEMINI SPACESHIP IS DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF THE MERCURY SPACE-CRAFT, WHICH USED A WATER-EVAPORATION TECHNIQUE. THE GEMINI SYSTEM USES A "HEAT EXCHANGE" TECHNIQUE SIMILAR TO THAT IN DOMESTIC REFRIGERATORS.
