Spain mourns the loss of a great Pope. The Chief Executive proclaims and orders a ten day national mourning. Flags with black ribbons are hung in official buildings and private homes. In the Episcopal Palace people of all social ranks express their condolence. In the churches the faithful gather to pray for the Pontiff.
All the Spanish press echo the sorrow of Catholic Spain....
In the Palace of the Papal Nuncio in Madrid the testimonies of sorrow are numberless. The Mayor of Madrid and all the Ministers of the Cabinet sign in the sheets placed in one of the palace halls. The grief of the whole country at the death of Pius XII and their filial love and fervent devotion is thus made manifest. The Diplomatic Corps also goes to the Diplomatic See of the Vicar of Christ in Madrid to tend their condolences.
In the national church of San Francisco el Grande solemn exequies, organized by the Spanish Government, are celebrated. The Papal Nuncio, Mgs. Antoniutti and the Patriarch of the Western Indies and Bishop of Madrid-Alcala, Dr. Eijo y Garay, arrive and likewise the President of the Cortes and the Ministers.
After reviewing the troops who rendered military honours,H.E. the Chief Executive accompanied by Mrs. Franco is greeted by the dignitaries. Franco enters the church in the middle of which the catafalque with the papal tiara has been erected.... The mass is said by Dr. Eijo y Garay assisted by Friars of the Franciscan Order.
The death of blessed Pope afflicts the whole world. His memory shall be kept alive by the gigantic proportions of this work which so greatly enhanced the Church and added to her universality and prestige. His sacrifice in pro or peace, his struggle for social progress of Christian spirit and for justice and charity shall never be forgotten. His example shall be like a beacon lightning the path of mankind.
