Background: The 28th annual boxing tournament organised by the International Military Sports Council (CISM) started in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, on Monday (18 October).

SYNOPSIS: Brigadier Chareles Beausoleil, Ghana's acting Chief of Defence Staff, inspected the teams of the 15 competing nation before the tournament began. Altogether about 150 boxers and 90 officials are taking part in the championships. Boxing is only one of the events sponsored under the CISM's combat programme. A series of tournaments has been held since the CISM started in 1948.

Brigadier Beausoleil said many of the problems threatening mankind could be eased by healthy international rivalries in sport. He then opened the tournament and said Ghana had donated a trophy for the winning nation.

The first bout of the tournament was a light-flyweight contest between Mandani Abderrahmane of Algeria - with the stripe on his trunks - and Tanachai Tipaunan of Thailand.

The Thai boxer built up an early points lead over Abderrahmane. The Algerian put in a desperate finish but his attacks were rather wild and Tipaunan hale on to win comfortably on points.

In the flyweight division, local fighter Kwao Kuleho met Frenchman M. Brossault. Ghana first competed in CISM boxing in 1970 and won five gold medals at their first tournament, but both boxers were wary of each other at the start of this contest.

Kuleho counter attacked strongly when Brossault did succeed in landing a punch and he was awarded the bout on a unanimous decision by the five judges.

The light-welter-weight division - and an exciting clash between Obisia Nwahpa of Nigeria - with number 17 on his back - and Yacubu Yesufu of Ghana. Yesufu knocked Nwahpa down in the third round, but the Nigerian regained his feet.

The Ghanaian continued to attack Nwahpa throughout the third round, but was warned several times for holding in clinches by the referee, Mr. Kourad of Iran, and Nwahpa was finally awarded the bout after Yesufu was disqualified for persistent holding.
