Background: Arabs, crossing the Allenby Bridge from Jordan under a summer visit scheme started some years ago, have told of large Syrian troops concentrations on the Jordanian border. They also said that all the major roads in northern Jordan appear to be under the control of the Government following King Hussein's action against the Palestine guerrillas. Between 1500 and 1800 Arabs crossed from Jordan yesterday to visit relatives. They told of many deaths in the fighting in Northern Jordan.....some estimate ran as high as 2,000....but Israeli officials said this was undoubtedly exaggerated.
SYNOPSIS: Under a summer visit scheme instituted by Israel some years ago, more than 1500 Arabs crossed the Allenby Bridge from Jordan yesterday to visit relatives. The Syrians among their number told of large Syrian troop concentrations massed on Jordan's border. The Arabs said that there were no road blocks on major routes in Northern Jordan as there has been for the last three years.
The Arabs also told of a death toll of 2,000 in the fighting between Jordanian Government troops and the guerrillas. However, Israeli officials say this figure is probably exaggerated.
