    SCOPE: This coverage is of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Carl Vinson at different times in their careers.

    BACKGROUND : A joint ceremony for two of the United States Navy's newest nuclear-powered aircraft carriers will be held at 10 a.,. Saturday, October 11, at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Newport News, Virginia. Ceremonies will include the launching of the DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN-69) and the keel laying of the CARL VINSON (CVN-70). Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller, Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower, and former Georgia Congressman Carl Vinson are scheduled to participate in the ceremonies. Vice President Rockfeller will be principal speaker for the event. Mrs. Eisenhower will sponsor the ship bearing the name of the late President, and Congressman Vinson, former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, will deliver remarks and authenticate a keel assembly for the carrier bearing his name.

    The EISENHOWER and the VINSON are the third and fourth nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in the U.S. Navy. As Nimitz-class carriers, each ship will operate 13 years before refuelling. Both will carry two nuclear reactors, four propellers, four catapults and spaces for about 100 tactical aircraft.

    The ships are among the largest every built. Both are over 1000 feet long and 252 fee wide, with flight deck areas of four and one half acres. The vessels displace 95,0000 tons, travel in excess of 30 knots and accommodate nearly 6,300 persons.

    The EISENHOWER is scheduled for delivery in 1977 and the in 1980.
