Background: A 29-month blackout on films showing) submarines firing Polaris missiles has been lifted.Off the Florida coast last week (August 23) two were blasted skywards from the submerged nuclear sub, Alexander Hamilton.
The solid fuel rockets were shot from tubes of compressed air in the submarine's decks. They ignited only after breaking the sea surface. The firing were 30 minutes apart.
The Navy later reported that both missiles found their targets 17-hundred miles away.
(Since March 1961 the Navy had adopted a hush-hush policy on Polaris firings. This policy has now been changed and future firings will be publicised.
