Background: Rumanian Foreign Minister Cornelia Manescu arrived in Tananarive on Friday at the start of a four-day official visit to Malagasy.
Mr. Manescu, who was accompanied by a Rumanian Government delegation, was greeted at the airport by his Malagasy counterpart, M. Jacques Rabemanjara.
On his arrival Mr. Manescu said Rumania's policy was based on absolute respect for the national independence of states. He said he hoped the development of relations between the Malagasy republic and his country would contribute to world peace.
The following day (Saturday), Mr. Manescu signed a commercial agreement designed to extend bilateral trade between the two countries, with Rumania taking Malagasy coffee, rice and minerals, and Malagasy taking Rumania agricultural machinery and industrial equipment.
The two countries also agreed to co-operate on certain scientific projects.
The visit is in return for one paid to Rumania last September by a Malagasy delegation headed by M. Rabemanjara.
