Background: MR. CHOU EN-LAI, PRIME MINISTER OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, ARRIVED IN BAMAKO ON THURSDAY (JAN 16) FOR A FIVE-DAY OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE REPUBLIC OF MALI. HE FLEW IN FROM GHANA AFTER ISSUING A JOINT COMMUNIQUE WITH PRESIDENT NKRUMAH CALLING FOR AN AFRO-ASIAN AND LATIN AMERICAN "ANTI-IMPERIALIST" CONFERENCE.

GREETED AT BAMAKO BY PRESIDENT MODIBO KEITA, MR. CHOU EN-LAI SAID HIS VISIT WAS INTENDED TO STRENGTHEN CO-OPERATION AND SOLIDARITY BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. MALI, HE SAID, HAD IN THREE YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE ACHIEVED "REMARKABLE" SUCCESSES INTERNATIONALLY AND IN ITS OWN DEVELOPMENT.

FOR HIS PART, PRESIDENT KEITA TOLD THE CHINESE LEADER THAT MALI SUPPORTED HIS GOVERNMENT'S "LEGITIMATE RIGHT" TO SIT IN THE UNITED NATIONS. HE ALSO THANKED THE PRIME MINISTER FOR CHINA'S TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO MALI GIVEN, HE SAID, "WITHOUT INTERFERENCE IN MALI'S INTERNAL AFFAIRS."
MR. CHOU EN-LAI AND HIS PARTY OF 60 ARE EXPECTED TO FLY FROM BAMAKO TO GUINEA ON TUESDAY FOR THE NEXT STAGE OF THEIR TWO-MONTH TOUR.
