Background: The Australian Oil Administration were recently constructing a new oil pipe-line bridge over the River Danube, between Lobau, a suburb of Vienna, on the north side, and Schwechat to the south. On each bank they have erected 80ft high Y-shaped pylons, towering over the picturesque locale of the river.

In supporting frames - suspended from thick steel ropes - several pipes will span the Danube, connecting the central oil tank depot in Lobau with the oil refinery in Schwechat. oil will travel in both directions. As pumping stations send the oil from the Lobau depot to Schwechat, the refined oil will flow back to the central depot where it will be loaded and shipped.

A technical feature of the construction is that the suspension bridge will have to carry loads that are heavier than the weight of the bridge itself. The weight of the full pipes will be about 530 tons - weight of the bridge is 350 tons.

Construction of the bridge is difficult and dangerous, and all river traffic was suspended during day-time. Red balloons were used as warning signals for up-stream and down-stream traffic.
