    Background: NEW DELHI, INDIA

INTRODUCTION: Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, appealed for unity throughout the nation on the country's 34th Independence Day on Sunday (15 August). But despite her speech, divisions throughout the country remain, mainly of a religious nature.

SYNOPSIS: Mrs. Gandhi made her appeal at Red Fort, New Delhi against a background of continuing unrest. Forty-eight people have been killed and more than 300 injured in clashes between Hindus and Muslims in various parts of the country since May.

Many foreign diplomats and members of Parliament from both houses were present as Mrs. Gandhi reviewed a guard of honour drawn from all Indian services. Her government has become increasingly concerned about the relationship between Hindus -- around 80 per cent of the population -- and Muslims, representing 11 per cent. Government sources blame Hindu cultural organisations for fostering an attitude of antagonism towards Muslims. Mrs. Gandhi has other problems. Many of the 100 million people from the lowest caste of Hindu society, the untouchables, are reported to be becoming increasingly dissatisfied.

The Red Fort was the traditional seat of Indian government from 1638 until the British Colonisation. Mrs. Gandhi also appealed for increased industrial production.

The Prime Minister went on to highlight the achievement of her and also praised scientists working on the experimental communications satellite, Apple, launched with the Ariane space vehicle in June from a site in French Guiana.
