The Harrier will give the first public showing of the new ski jump at the Farnborough show. The new aircraft advances Britain's achievements in the field of vertical take-off aircraft operating from ships, towards which the United States has been moving, and which the Soviet Navy has already achieved with its new Kiev class ships.

Background: The latest version of Britain's 'jump jet' aircraft has flown for the first time. It is the Sea Harrier FRS Mark 1, and made a 35-minute proving flight at British Aerospace's airfield at Dunsford, Surrey on Sunday (20 August).

SYNOPSIS: The new Sea Harrier is radar equipped, has an updated range of electronics and an altered silhouette, which features a raised cockpit for better visibility.

The Royal Navy has ordered thirty four Sea Harriers, which will come into service late next year. They will carry out fighter, reconnaissance and strike roles. A number of foreign navies are also interested in the plane.

British Aerospace's chief test pilot John Farley showed three vertical take-offs, several rolls in flight, hovering and vertical landings. in the 1980s, Royal Navy Sea Harriers will fly from new 'Invincible' class command cruisers, now being built, and equipped at the bows with a 'ski jump' ramp, which gives a higher take-off with more fuel and weapons on board. When this Sea Harrier performs at the Farnborough Air Show in England next month, military teams from many countries will have a close-up at its capabilities.
