Background: Israeli infantrymen killed at least eight Palestinian guerrillas in a three hour battle in Southern Lebanon on Friday (17 October). Israeli army spokesman claimed that the task force returned unscathed. But the Palestinian News Agency, WAFA, said in Beirut that 27 Israelis were killed or wounded.

SYNOPSIS: During the operation the Israelis blew up five houses in the two of Jarmaq used by guerrillas as dwellings or explosives stores.

The bases were manned by various guerrilla groups but in particular the Iraqi sponsored Arab Liberation Front.

The attack was the biggest against targets inside Lebanon for several months. It was sanctioned despite widespread international condemnation of Israeli raids against the Palestinians.

Casualties included a large number of livestock.

The raiders, who entered Lebanon on foot, said they caught the guerrillas by surprise and opened fire on forward artillery, rockets, and staging posts.

United Nations observers in southern Lebanon reported that Major Saad Haddad's Christian militia had shelled the Palestinian positions to soften them up for the Israelis.

After the battle, Palestinian bomb disposal experts were brought in to dismantle unexploded bombs and landmines.

In nearby Lebanese hospitals many of the wounded are being treated, including young children.

After the attack, Israeli Prime Minister, Menachem Begin said defiantly that the raid would not be the last against targets inside South Lebanon.
