Background: With the Olympic Games due to open on the weekend of July 19, only finishing touches are required to complete the many sports venues that will be used. This doesn't apply only to Moscow but the provincial centres being used in conjunction with the main stadiums in the Soviet capital. But there is the occasional set-back.

SYNOPSIS: This is the motorway linking Brest on the Soviet/Polish border with Moscow. The road is intended to whisk motorists to the main Olympic venues. but, on the way, at Minsk, it deteriorates to a narrow country road. It isn't ready on time.

But a delay at Minsk has its rewards. As well as being an attractive city it, joins Kiev, Leningrad and Tallin as one of the Tour cities to host the Olympics along with Moscow.

A few miles (kilometres) outside the city centre, Camp Stolka is one of the top security training camps for national athletes of the Soviet Union. Members of the gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, basketball and hockey teams are training here.

And they don't spend all their time training in their specialist sports. here, the Soviet wrestlers polish up on their soccer skills.

Security at the camp is now been tighter with the arrival of Syrian and Algerian athletes, who also will stay here.

Two members of the Syrian Olympic football team jog around the grounds of the Camp Stolka compound.

And this is where they'll be playing their Olympic ties .. at least in the preliminary rounds. It's the Minsk football stadium, normally the home ground for the Soviet Dynamo side. The seating capacity has been greatly increased for the Olympics. It hasn't been done by knocking down the stadium, but by building a new main stand on top of the old one.

The stadium entrances also have had to be expanded. Some are decorated by bronze sculptures depicting athletes in competition.

The Minsk-Moscow highway won't only be used to ferry tourists to the Olympic capital. It's also the venue for Olympic rod-cycling events. At the Moscow end of the route, grandstands have been built at the side of the road. There, spectators will applaud those competitors whose efforts end once they reach the Olympic City.
