Background: The Pentagon will make a decision soon which could ultimately mean 20 billion dollars worth of contracts to the United States and its allies. Officials are expected to announce their choice for a new jet fighter for the 1980's ... and then they'll try to influence their NATO allies to follow suit.

Under discussion are the General Dynamics YF-16 jet and the Northrop Corporations YF-17. Whichever aircraft is chosen, and at this stage it seems certain to be the YF-16, it will mean an initial boost of between five billion and eight billion collars to the manufacturer. The United States will be buying an initial batch of 650 of the light-weight fighters over the next six years.

The Pentagon will then try to sell the aircraft to its NATO allies. From there the sky is the limit. Middle East nations will be offered the aircraft and in the continuing spiral of arms races they will probably accepts.

The Americans are billing the arms deal as "the arms sale of the century". Their European allies are being offered the chance of building parts for the chosen aircraft. If it's bought by Arab nations they could recoup their costs by selling those parts in that area.
