    Two British drivers and four spectators were injured on August 24 during a crash at the 1,000 Lakes Car Rally in Jyvaskyla, Finland. British driver Julian Roderick and his co-driver David Allan were injured when their car left a road early in the race. The car struck four spectators who apparently were in a prohibited area at the time of the crash. None of the injured were seriously hurt. Police said that the accident was the result of human error. The crash occurred in the second special stage of the really, the ninth race of 12 world championship events this year. Officials had declared the tough finnish course safe though there was a fatal accident on the track during the last rally. Finland dominated the rally with Ari Vatanen, Markku alen and Henri Toivonen, placing first, second and third. Sweden's Stig Blomqvist finished fourth and increased his lead in the overall standings. He now ha 113 points, 23 ahead of Alen and 27 ahead of Finnish driver Hannu Mikkola with three events left. Mikkola was forced to drop out of the rally after his car was damaged on a bumpy road. the rally winner, Vatanen, finished the race two minutes ahead of the other drivers. He had quit two rallies after problems developed with his Peugeot 205 car. Alen, a four-time winner of the 1,000 Lakes Rally, was followed by third-placed Toivonen who was more than two minutes further back. Both Finnis drivers were in Lancia Rallys.
