Background: Scotland's Celtic knocked the much-feared Dutch Ajax team out of the European Cup in an Amsterdam match on September 39. The Scottish team won 2-1 to qualify for the second round draw in Zurich on 4-3 aggregate. Ajax star 35-year-old Johan Cruyff saw his hopes of one last European Cup triumph dashed by 20-year-old Celtic player Charlie Nicholas. He scored the first goal with a left-foot chip over goalkeeper Piet Schrijvers high into the corner of the net. But Ajax came back in the 65th minute with a goal from Gerald Vanenburg which appeared to have secured victory for the Dutch giants. Then, three minutes from time, just after Cruyff had retired to the bench, Celtic substitute George McCluskey collected a long clearance from defence and tucked the ball neatly into the net. In Valencia, Spain, English team Manchester United were eliminated from the Cup by 1 2-1 win from Valencia who go through 2-1 on aggregate. United scored the first goal, a minute from halftime, when Brian Robson headed home a curling cross from Raymond Wilkins. Manchester United continued to dominate the game until the Romanian referee awarded a controversial penalty for United player Steve Moran's tackle on Ribes. Valencia scored from the penalty for United player Steve Moran's tackle on Ribes. Valencia scored from the penalty which sparked off another burst of fighting between fans on the terraces. Valencia's winning goal was scored three minutes after the penalty by Roberto, when United's defenders failed to clear a free kick.
