    Background: ATHENS, GREECE/PARIS, FRANCE

Demonstrations by the Armenian communities in Paris and Athens on April 23 and 24 marked the 68th anniversary of what the Armenians claim was a genocide among the Armenian population by the Turkish authorities in 1915. Shortly after the outburst of the First World War the Turkish government resolved to deport the whole Armenian population of about 1,700,000, living in the eastern part of Turkey to Syria and Mesopotamia. It is estimated that about 600,000 Armenians died or were massacred en route. Armenians claim the figures to be even higher, and say that about one-and-a-half million Armenians were slaughtered by the Turkish army. Turkey has always denied the massacre charge. In Athens on April 24, and Paris, on April 23, about a thousand Armenians staged a rally and protest march towards the Turkish embassies demanding self determination. They carried banners reading "Turks out of Armenia" and "Recognition of the Genocide by Turkey and the United Nations". In Athens, police clashed with the demonstrators, preventing them from reaching the embassy. They did not reach the Paris embassy either. In the last ten years radical Armenian groups, such as the Armenian Secret Army (ASALA), have declared an undercover war against Turkish representative throughout the world. They have claimed responsibility for killing at least 25 Turks, most of them diplomats and their families, in an attempt to force the Turkish authorities to grant self-determination.
