Background: President de Gaulle gave President Kennedy of the United States a taste of the grandeur of the France of old on June 1. The occasion- a State banquet in the Hall of Mirrors at the historic Palace of Versailles.
It was there that King Louis XIV assembled his court at the park of French glory. It was a strictly formal occasion, with the two Presidents, their wives, and guests in evening dress. Mrs Kennedy was dressed in white and with jewels in her hair.
The orchestra was dressed in the resplendent costume of the Louis era - complete with powdered wigs. Later, they attended a special ballet performance in the theatre at the Palace.
