Background: Shock defeats for top seeded Jimmy and third seeded Ivan Lendl have left the French Open Tennis Championships' men's title wide open. Unseeded Frenchman Christophe Roger-Vasselin, playing a slow clay court game of looping returns to Connors' forehand, pulled off and incredible upset by defeating the United States world champion. The 25-year-old French player, beaten by Connors in their only other meeting, blunted the American's attack, forced a tie-break, and won a place in the semi-finals. The champion fought back in the third set, but could not maintain control against eight-ranked Vasselin, ousting Connors 6-4, 6-4, 7-6. Vasselin's semi-final opponent will be fellow countryman Yannick Noah, who mastered the challenge of Czechoslovak Ivan Lendl in a two hour 43 minute thriller, winning 7-6, 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. The French Number One player, in brilliant form, produced some of the tournament's best tennis so far, with devastating serves and powerful cross-court volleys. Noah and Lendl were closely matched throughout. Each lost his serve n the first four games, with the Frenchman winning a tension-packed tie-break in the first set. The two stunning upsets mean that there will be a French player in the men's finals for the first time since 1972.
