DORAN: "These resolutions have to be seen against a background of the constant preoccupation of the foes of Israel with Judea and Sumaria, which are being covered for the execution of their master plan of converting these areas into a safe house, as it were , for acts of terrorism and subversion against Israel as the first stage, with the intention in their minds of eventually using those areas as a staging-ground for an outright attack on my country from the east at a subsequent stage. These plans are no secret. They have been published, and they have been voiced quite openly practically every other day. This situation calls for the utmost vigilance on the part of Israel, and its security needs must never be lost sight of. Once this situation is appreciated and remembered, everything else falls into place. These resolutions are part and parcel of that plan. Their purpose is to discredit the Israeli administration in the areas, and a special committee to investigate Israeli practices plays its role in that evil design."
HAZEM NUSEIBEH: "If I were representative of occupied Palestine, I should be well advised to keep my silence, because that is no case which can be defended. There is no such thing as enlightened or unenlightened occupation - occupation is the most illegal of all defiances of international law and an orderly international order. Now, Mr. President, the latest Israeli violation of international law was reported only this morning--two mayors on the West Bank have been arrested, harassed and interrogated by the military occupation authorities of Palestine. This comes a mere few days in the wake of our resolution requesting the release of the Mayor of Nablus in the West Bank pending deportation. As for the settlement of Elon Moreh, a settlement near Nablus, and even though it has not been vacated in compliance with a court ruling, the Israeli occupation has seized a nearby hill a mere few kilometres, to establish a settlement on what the Israel occupation calls state domain, even though this is in flagrant violation of international law, the Geneva Convention, and all efforts to create and maintain an orderly international order."

Background: The United Nations General Assembly has condemned Israel's annexation and settlements policy in the occupied territories. The U.N. move came on Wednesday (12 December), and took the form of three resolutions charging Israel with attempting to change the territories' status and demographic character.
SYNOPSIS: Israeli Ambassador J. Doran claimed the resolutions were aimed at discrediting Israel.
The General Assembly resolutions closely followed a recommendation that the U.N. Security Council try to persuade Israel to stop establishing further settlements, and dismantle existing ones.
