    Background: FRANKFURT, WEST GERMANY

Violent clashes broke out on Saturday (30 January) between police and demonstrators protesting at plans to build a new runway at Frankfurt airport. Sixteen police were wounded, six of them seriously, and 47 demonstrators were arrested in the clashes on woodland adjoining the airport. Police used tear gas to drive back the protesters, some armed with clubs and fire bombs, from a concrete wall which has been built around part of the construction site of the new four kilometre (2.5 mile) runway. Police said they took three seriously injured demonstrators to hospital, while a spokesman for the Citizens' Action Group co-ordinating the protest said between 12 and 15 demonstrators were badly hurt. The number of demonstrators was estimated by the police at 8,000, but the Citizens' Action Group put the figure nearer 20,000. The protest was banned by police authorities, but demonstrators came from all parts of West Germany to show their disapproval of the runway. There's been a ten year legal and physical battle over the runway project which opposition groups say will destroy up to three million trees in precious woodland and create even greater noise pollution at what is already one of the world's busiest airports.
