Background: Britain's chief Rhodesia negotiator, Lord Goodman, arrived in Salisbury on Friday (17 September) to open another round of talks aimed at settling the six-year-old Anglo-Rhodesian independence dispute. The lawyer led a four-man team into secret negotiations only four hours after their arrival.

The two sides met in the offices of Prime Minister Ian Smith in what was described as an atmosphere of cautiously rising optimism. Facing the negotiators remained the so far absolute problem of reconciling opposing British and Rhodesian attitudes on the political future of the breakaway colony's largely unenfranchised African majority.

Rhodesia's unilateral declaration of independence form britain occurred in 1965.
