Background: A soccer match between teams of blind people was played in Djakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday (13 July). The players were among a party of people from a blind institution in Bandung who had come to the capital demonstrate their abilities in various fields.

An empty bootpolish can filled with pebbles was attached to the ball. The players were able to follow its movements by listening for the clatter, and their judgement proved uncannily accurate.

The referee's whistle was of course no problem, but the linesman, instead of flags, carried a small drum which he beat when the ball ran out of play.

Despite their handicap the blind footballers played surprisingly well. And although the match only lasted a few minutes, the football fans cheered them enthusiastically all the way.
