Background: President Anwar Sadat greeted President Hafez Al-Assad of Syria yesterday (Monday) as he arrived at the coastal resort of Mersa Matruh to attend a meeting of the Federation of Arab Republics (F.A.R.)
The meeting is the fourth session of the Presidential Council of the Federation linking Egypt, Syria and Libya. Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was due to arrive this morning (Tuesday), when the talks are scheduled to commence.
President Sadat is to chair the meeting, and yesterday morning he conferred with President Assad, soon after his arrival, for more than four hours.
The three leaders are expected to discuss latest developments in the troubled Middle East situation, as well as the growing links between their countries in the fields of communications, transport and research. The meeting will also provide a forum for the exchange of views and information resulting from meetings with other foreign leaders held independently by the three leaders, such as President Sadat's and Colonel Gaddafi's meeting with Algerian President Boumedienne last month, and Colonel Gaddafi's recent talks with Ugandan President ldi Amin and Palestine guerrilla leader Yasser Arafat. Also on the agenda, the implications of President Nixon's visit to Moscow.
The Federation of Arab Republics was approved in a nationwide plebiscite in the three states last year and embraces some 45-million people about half the entire Arab population.
