Background: SYNOPSIS: The rugged terrain of Papua-New Guinea encroaches almost to 3 1/2 to doorstep of Port Moresby.

At SOGERI, 25-miles from the administrative centre, a group of cadet patrol officers have begun their two-month training program. They are the first officers to be recruited for a fixed term of six years.

Their instruction concentrates particularly in the first instance on land tenure. Their tutor was BILL McGRATH, a patrol officer with seven years experience.

Gine Vire, is one Papuan in the class with Ofe Gwaibo and Wille Bogabu. They are the only indigenes among 21 Australians doing the course.

Classroom instruction is supplemented from the start with field exercises in which particular emphasis is placed on surveying.

This was their first taste of the work they will be doing for six years. Accurate survey of areas will be most important to allow the calculation of compensation when land is resumed from people who hold customary rights Bob Godden of Goulbun takes a sighting.

In two months they will be appointed to the patrol posts in the interior of Papua-New Guinea.
