Background: Austria's David Zwilling won the Men's Downhill event at the World Alpine Ski Championships at St. Morte in Switzerland on Saturday (9 February)
Zwilling, aged 24--a versatile skier with a record of good results in alcine events--won the gold model with a time of one minute 56.98 seconds.

Franz Klammer, also of Austria, took the silver medal in one minute 58.01 seconds. Willy Frommelt of Liechtenstein took the bronze with a time of one minute 58.16 seconds.

Race favourite Roland Collombin of Switzerland fell high up on the course and was eliminated.

Only a day before the race, David Zwilling was on the point of withdrawing because his practice was going badly. He said he did nth expect to win the gold medal.

SYNOPSIS: Willy Frommelt of Liechtenstein sets out in the Men's Downhill event at the World Alpine Ski Championships at St. Moritz in Switzerland on Saturday. Frommelt came in third to win the bronze medal with a time of one minute fifty-eight-point-one-six-seconds.

Austria's Franz Klammer came second completing the three-and-a-half-thousand-yard course with twenty-six gates in a time of one minute fifty-eight-point-oh-one seconds. Klammer gave the Austrian team its second silver medal.

But the best performance came from fellow Austrian, David Zwilling who won the gold medal with a time of one minute fifty-six-point-nine-eight seconds. The course favoured the early starters, and Zwilling was away third in the field.

Only the day before the event, Zwilling was on the point of withdrawing form the race because his practice was going badly. His win gave the Austrian team the overall lead in the Championships with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
