Background: INTRODUCTION: The Angolan President, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, has been in the Nigerian capital, Lagos at the head of a large delegation of government members, for three days of talks with Nigerian leaders. The African government of Nigeria and Angola have been especially close since 1975. This was when the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) came to power, and one of its main supporters was Nigeria.

SYNOPSIS: When the Angolan President alighted from his plane he was met by President Shehu Shagari of Nigeria and his senior ministers. The large Angolan delegation included oil, fisheries and naval ministers. Wide-ranging talks were scheduled to cover trade, as well as policy towards Namibia. Angola is the main backer of South-West African People's Organisation, which is fighting South Africa for control of Namibia. Nigeria is also a strong critic of South African policies. The Angolans are keen for Nigerian assistance in reconstructing an economy ravaged by the civil war. Both are significant oil producers, although Nigerian oil production is much greater than Angola's. The Angolan President's visit is expected to be the first of several rounds of talks.

President Dos Santos was entertained by a female troupe performing a war crime dance.

Apart from his talks with Nigeria's leaders, the Angolan President was scheduled to lay a wreath in remembrance of Nigeria's past heroes, and to attend a state banquet in his honour.

The two Presidents left the airport in the same limousine on their way to the State House to open discussions.
