Background: NEWTON GROVE, NORTH CAROLINA, U.S.A.

One driver was shot and 10 others wounded on February 1 in violence caused by a nationwide strike of United States independent truck drivers. At least 50 truck drivers were attacked by strikers furious that some of their colleagues were continuing to work. The murdered driver, George Capps, was hit by a single bullet from a high velocity rifle. He was shot as he was driving on Highway 701 outside Newton Grove in North Carolina. Police in the states of Alabama, Maryland, Connecticut and Oregon also reported sniper attacks. About half of the 100,000 Independent Truckers' Association members went on strike on January 31 in protest at the proposed increases in taxes on fuel and road use. The truckers claimed the new taxes threatened to put them out of business. The strike had little immediate impact on the fruit and vegetable supply, but truckers predicted a prolonged walk-out would cripple the market. Police throughout the United States have warned drivers to stay off the roads at night and travel in convoys during the day.
