Background: Almost the entire population of the village of Huefingen, in South West Germany - some three thousand - have just been engaged for a month, on laying a most striking and unusual carpet of flowers. The designing of this carpet in sections is carried out according to a tradition of 110 years by single families, and the design changes each year. For the last four days preceding the Corpus Christi procession the mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, kneel in the roadway, carefully lying the separate, tiny, flowers into sand in the intricate patterns of the design.
The effect is striking and beautiful and a tribute to the devotion and religious zeal of these inhabitants of Huefingen.
