Background: The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has called for international government action to counteract food shortages in Africa. The FAO made its plea before the opening of a conference on food strategies in Africa in the Togolese capital of Lome.

SYNOPSIS: The five-day conference was held in the Congress Room of the Togolese House of Assembly in Lome.

More than fifty countries were represented at the meeting, chaired by Edward Saouma, the Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.

He told delegates that this year, more than ever, the African continent is suffering from a crucial food deficit caused by droughts.

Togo's President, General Gnassingbe Eyadema, called for a new economic order, with all countries gaining self-sufficiency in food. He said that the whole of Africa's population should be mobilised to transform the continent's agriculture. General Eyadema says that in his own country the area for cultivation is to be increased, there's to be more spending to guarantee a water-supply and a greater emphasis on mechanisation. There was also a call for the setting up of an international emergency food reserve to be financed with the help of the International Monetary Fund.
