Background: The Prime Minister of Israel, Mrs Golda Meir, appealed to Egypt on Tuesday (29 Dec) to open a new era of peace between the two countries at the resumed Middle-East Peace talks.
She was addressing a meeting of the Knesset (Parliament) and warned that there would be no Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories until the establishment of peace and said that Israel would not return to the pre-six-day war boundaries.
Mrs Meir was making a major policy speech on the Government's decision that Israel should return to the Middle-East Peace talks under United Nations envoy Gunnar Jarring.
She reiterated the Israeli view that peace could only come through direct negotiations between the parties.
Mr Menachem begin, a cabinet Minister who became leader of the Opposition when the decision to rejoin the Jarring talks was taken warned the Knesset that the negotiations could be a trap for Israel.
